After reading my blog, I was kind of amazed but not really surprised. I feel the most I have grown in this course was my thinking and how I perceive everything and sometimes everyone. Every since that video on the Secret, I realized how I have to be on a day to day bases in order to get the things I need and want. Reading my blog, I believe it's obvious that I pretty much know what I want and where I want to be but because of the many obstacles that I have encountered in my life and will encounter in the future. I realized that there are so many things possible for me that I thought could never happen because I have been educated and taught to basically not settle and truly strive for the best because I deserve it.
I think the activity that I have engaged in the most since this course was putting myself out there. For example, the interviews we did with our role models and getting advice and learning their experiences and what it took them to get to where they are today. I was extremely terrified when I made my first call becasue I didnt know what to expect but when I began talking and getting to know the doctor, I became more relaxed and comfortable.
I cant really some up the three things I liked most about the course because I LOVED it all. Everything felt so inspirational to me and instead of someone just telling me what I needed to do, I finally had people who showed me how to do those things with or without the everyday road blocks. I really liked the choice of books choosen for the class to read because I could relate to them and questions I had and were afraid to ask sometimes, they seem to be answered by the books.
The only thing I liked least about the course is the documentaries length. After a few people talked it was fine, but when it felt ongoing and times you thought it was over it would start back over again became frustrating. The documentaries were very helpful dont get me wrong, but they were a little to long over due with the helpfulness.
The only improvement which can or cannot be helpful is the panel. However, I was fine without the panel because I still learned alot without them and my role models was like my panel anyways because I probably would have asked the panel the same questions I had asked my role models.
I really appreciate Dr. Rock and her effort to help us because she showed us that she cared about us and was really trying to show us good leadership and what we really had to do to become successful. Dr. Rock is a very successful woman who I admire as a role model of my own because she knows the value of hard work and dedication. THANKS! I HAD A BLAST IN THIS COURSE!

Work The Plan
Each week that goes by, I get closer and closer to my goal and it feels kind of good but scary at the same time.
This past weeks plans were very simple and small because my current goal is my "half goal" to my real goal. My first steps for the week was to talk to my advisor about what actions to take regarding school and what it is looking like as far as me graduating at a certain time. The talk with my advisor was very helpful to me and I felt fine afterwards because I knew what actions I had to take but I was also terrified.
I was not able to hold a weekly buisness meeting with my buddy because he has been very ill so therefore that buisness meeting was not able to occur but in our last weeks meeting we kind of planned far ahead in the future of what our next few weeks are suppose to look like.
My sunday night meeting with myself did not consist of much but the usual doing homework and studying. The only difference is that I will register for classes if I am able to and try to see my way through how the rest of my semesters at UIC will look like.

The Buddy System
Completing the first steps makes me feel so much more closer to my dream, however my current first steps are pretty small because my goal is a half goal. My first steps are to continue to go to class, do my homework, study, and go to tutoring. I have been doing my first steps and completing them and now im just waiting for crunch time where I can transfer to the next step and phase.
I have a buddy by the buddy sytem from Babara Sher and we had our first weekly meeting. It went pretty well, we got down to buisness and followed the seps needed to take when in the meeting. The first 5 minutes of our meeting, we did a catch up or report in where we told each other what we did in the past week and how successful or unsuccessful we were. Then we spent the next 20 minutes a piece scheduling and telling what we need to do for the next week, when we were going to do them, and even how we had to do them. We didnt really have no hard times as much; it was kind of quick and fast. We sort of came up with solutions to our problems we had that was getting in the way of us completing our goals. The last five minutes, we scheduled our booster calls and did a short recap of what we were talking about and planned and then told each other what bwe were going to do for the following week and wished each other good luck in accomplishing our task.
I kind of like the buddy system because it is very helpful and encouraging to know that I have someone to root me on and let me know that they are there and that I can do it.

Moving and Shaking
Creating the planning wall of my life for the next two years was fine but then when it came down to actually doing my first steps, it became scary. Although my first steps are pretty simple, it is still a step closer to my goal and dream. My short term goal for now is to get my Undergraduate degree but my real goal is to become a pediatrician but since I have quite a ways, I decided to break it down. My first steps was just to continue to go to class, study, and do my homework. I have completeed these first steps and it feels kind of good to know I have accomplished what I said I wanted and was going to accomplish. Even though it is a great challenge, I'm going to continue to strive on and be the best I can be.
However with doing these steps there is great fear. Barbara Sher talkes about how when you are beginning to move closer to your goal, you start shaking meaning you are afraid and then tend to find ways to almost get out of it. I myself am very guilty of this alot of times and thats what makes it funny because I'm not the only one. Sher calls it resistance. I believe I have experienced some type of resistance before when it came down to completing an assignment for school. I know in my mind and heart that I have to do something really important for school like a paper or project but fear overcomes without me knowing its even fear and then I would be like "Well it can wait", or "I'll have time to do it this day or that day" and basically procrastinating. I didnt think it is a fear of being successful but then again it may be just because of the overwhelment of how things would be once I start living my dream. I believe I have to have more faith in myself and take a chill pill and not be afraid to make a difference in my own life and be all I can be.

Get Into Action
These past weeks have been all about getting into action and really accomplsihing our targets or working towards them. A present target for me was completing my five interviews of my role models which I was very successful and was able to make some bonds with the people I interviewed and they were really helpful.
This week was also about making our first steps which I have accomplished. After watching the documentary of "The Secret", I learned alot about my life whether it was the past or future and how I should act. I learned how I should think and how my thinking whether positively or negatively could reflect what happens. My first step was to try the new creative process of asking, believeing, then receiving. I wanted to focus my thoughts only on what I wanted and making them come true. Alot of times, I want a trouble free day, so one morning I woke up and the first thing I did was gratitude and being grateful that I woke up that morning and had complete functioning of my limbs. The rest of the day, I had to stay positive so I could attract positive things and I believe it worked for the most part. I was kind of excited that it worked and was ready to try something new and different. I also found out that although in the secret it kind of said that just thinking about what you want that it will come true but the thing behind the secret is motivation. When you think about what you want like gettinjg an A in a class and that's all you think about, then you start to do better in classes because you are now motivated to work hard for that A because you are only thinking positive and are now like I CAN DO THIS! and then you end up doing it. I felt really good after finding this out which motivated me even more to continue what I was doing in a positive way.

Reaching Out Part III
In this week's class, I was very successful in getting my last two interviews with my role models. Trying to get a hold of people when they have very busy lives is extremely complicated, especially when you leave call backs and you never get a call back.
My first interview was with Dr. Irwin Benuck. Dr. Benuck was very good in returning my call the same day I left a message to speak with him. I began my interview asking him what made him decide to become a Pediatrician and he stated that he decided in Medical School during his residency. He stated that he liked working with kids and watching them grow. My next question I asked was if he thought it was an easy or hard task and he said that it was pretty hard. There are alot of hours in school and although it was difficult, it was very interesting which inturn made it seem less dificult. The advice that he gave me was to work really hard, study hard, and make sure that this is something I want and that I will be interested in. Then I asked if he felt it was his target in life to happiness and success and he stated yes, he was very happy with his career and happy he made that decision to become a pediatrician.
My next interview was with Dr. Jennifer Bergquist. Dr. Bergquist was very energetic and excited to be answering some of my questions because I was following the same dreams. When I asked her what made her decide to become a pediatrician she stated that she also decided in Medical School during her residency. She said that she enjoyed pediatrics more than the other options in Med. School and pediatrics is more laid back plus she loved working with the kids and seeing them progress. She said that the road to becoming a pediatrician was pretty hard as well and for her, things didnt come easy so she had to put in the extra work and study hard. She also stated that the first two years of Med. School were pretty hard but of course it paid off in the end. The advice she gave me was to make sure that it was something I want to do. She also stated to volunteer and observe other doctors in practice on a day-to-day and their lifestyle because the career is really your life! She stated that becoming a pediatrician was her target out of life and it is very fulfilling. Her job is different from other jobs and thats why she loves it. She loves forming relationships with her patients and their famiies and she feels gratification. I also talked to Dr. Bergquist about Barbara Sher's Wishcraft and the whole background of our assignment and what the book was about and suggested it was a really good book to read and she said she will read it! I also congratulated her on the begginning of her family because she's 14 weeks preganant!!! (Which she also stated she was afraid knowing how her career is already her life but she is happy)
Another thing I was successful in was completing my planning wall although I found it very difficult to put thjings in time I did it! My planning wall is my new profile picture!

My Role Models
My goal and dream in life is to become a pediatrician and over the past two weeks, I was trying to contact different people who was already living my dream of a pediatrician. I finally was successful after the first week and was able to talk to three people. I came up with four simple questions to ask for my interview with them since they all had busy lives.
1. What made you decide to become a pediatrician?
2. Did you think it was an easy or stressful task?
3. What advice would you give someone following the same dream?
4. Did you feel that becoming a pediatrician was your target out of life to happiness and success.
My first interview was with a Dr. Arroyo who was really helpful and insightful. Interviewing and talking to her she stated she knew she wanted to become a pediatrician every since she was 8 years old when she was able to go with her pregnant mom to the OBgyny and see her baby sibling getting delivered. As she got older, she preceeded to become an OBgyny but didnt like it and when got the experience of a pediatrician, she stated she liked that more. It still involved being a doctor and dealing with children. When I asked her whether she thought it was easy or hard task, she stated really hard. She took it one step at a time. She also stated that not having doctors in her family made it helpful because going into something unexpected helped cause she just went in and did the work without no outside influence of people either talking negative or positive about it. When I asked for advice, she said to study hard, get good grades and Medical School wouild seem easier and also discipline myself because it will take away from social life alot but its worth it. Finally when asked was it her target she said Yes, very much. She is very happy and if she had to do it all over again, she would!
My second interview was with my own pediatrician as a child after my first one retired and her name is Dr. Roberts. Our interview was kind of personal because we were familiar with each other. When I asked her my first question, she stated that it wasnt something she wanted to do since forever, she fell into it through Medical School and getting the experience in her residency and figured it was a very rewarding career, appealing, and kids are honest and give positive feedback than most adults who see their doctors. She stated that the process was stressful but she stated the more you do it, the easier it gets. You are always learning new experiences and it involves alot of studying even after getting your license. Her advice was to just hang in there and dont give up. Be positive and go ahead if you absolutely know that it is something I want and if im a people person then I will be fine! When asked was it her target, she stated that she was very happy in her career and she wouldnt change it.
My final interview was with a Dr. Charone who I believe I have developed a relationship with. She was very nice and helpful. When asked what made her decide to become a pediatrician, she stated that it was just something she knew she wanted to do. She was the first to state that the process was not really hard , but then it was. She stated that the work load was excessive and alot of studying. Her advice was to make sure it was something I really want to do and it's a sacrifice because there's not much of a social life throughout the process. She stated to stay focus, keep trying , and dont give up. She stated that becoming a pediatrician was her target and that she felt destined to do it. She loves doing it and would'nt change it for nothing. She also left me with her email and said that I can contact her anytime with questions or help and she also will be able to provide me some information on the MCat and the Medical School application process!
- I was really glad I was able to do this exercise, it was very rewarding and helpful!!!

My Goal
- Reading Barbar Sher's chapter on brainstorming about our goals and creating a flow chart, I
decided to create one myself. However, seeing how my goal is to become a Pediatrician or at least get to Medical School, I realized I have a ways to go so I decided to brainstorm about my first step goal to get to my final goal which is to finish my ubdergraduate degree.
- I decided that in order to get my degree, I have to graduate and get good grades which means to study, do homework, and tutoring if neccessary. However before I get good grades, I have to go to class but before that, i have to register for classes but first have money and pay fees from the previous semesters. Then in order to go to classes, I have to either stay on campus or have transportation to and from home meaning get a bus pass. But in order to live on campus I have to apply for housing which goes back to having money. (Didnt know how to copy and paste my flow chart from Microsoft Word).
- I have also came up with a contact list of people who are already at my FINAL goal which is to become a Pediatrician.
1. Susan Toyetunde, M.D. –Pediatrics[
2. Terrold Butler, M.D.- Pediatrics
3. Lin Roberts, M.D. – Pediatrics
4. Shari Palmer, M.D. – Pediatrics
5. Sharon Scott, M.D.- Pediatrics
6. Patricia arroyo, M.D.- Pediatrics
7. Alma Buckner, M.D.- Pediatrics
8. Armand Gonzales, M.D.- Pediatrics
9. Molly Jacob, M.D.- Pediatrics
10. Diane Schaar, M.D.- Pediatrics

My Touch Stone and Personality Type
Reading Barbara Sher's chapter on GoalSearch, I learned certain parts about my dreams that I didnt really think about.
DREAM: I always had a dream of becoming a Pediatrician because I loved kids when I was a kid myself, and growing up. I also wanted to be a Pediatrician because I loved science and math and was always good at it so I fugured that this was something good for me and I knew I had a passion for it.
TOUCHSTONE: Realizing my dream even more, I realized that my touchstone of becoming a Pediatrician was making little children feel better and being able to relate to them and put myself in their position when they are not feeling well and doing all I can to make them feel better.
ROLE MODEL: My role model for me becoming a Pediatrician was my Pediatrician I had since birth until about 13 years old when he retired. I remember him being so niced and I loved the fact that he always had the solution to fix whatever problem I had. He always knew the right way to do things and when there were times that were painful like getting shots, he would always console me and remind me that it was for my good. He also encouraged me that I can be whoever I want to be and when I expressed to him my dreams of becoming a Pediatrician he was excited and flattered because he was part of my inspiration as well as the passion already embedded in me.
TARGET: My overall target is having my Medical Degree and being known as Dr. Christine Dixon, one of the best Pediatricians around.
When I took the Meyers-Briggs test, I wasnt really surprised at my results because I kind of knew it already but my results were:
ENFJ
Popular and sensitive, with outstanding people skills. Externally focused, with real concern for how others think and feel. Usually dislike being alone. They see everything from the human angle, and dislike impersonal analysis. Very effective at managing people issues, and leading group discussions. Interested in serving others, and probably place the needs of others over their own needs.
- The only thing I kind of dont agree with is that I usually dont like to be alone. I guess at this point in my life and the surrounding frustrations I get from being around certain people, I would love to be alone but other times I dont want to be alone so at certain times that part of my personality type is correct.

My Introduction
I am taking Leadership for Change because I believe that participating in a course like this will better help me discover myself and really understand who I am as a person and more as a African American woman. I also am interested in this course just by its name, LEADERSHIP....I'm all about learning how to become a leader or bettering myself as a leader. Leaders set trends and acccomplishes many goals throughout their life time and I want to be one of those amazing people.
As a child I was EXTREMELY goofy and part of me is today, and I always loved to have fun whether it was playing jump rope, going swimming, or running back and forth to the candy store because I couldnt get enough of the sweet stuff. What I believe to attract me most as a child was always being a helper. I loved when different events would occur in my neighborhood or at church because I would be the first to volunteer myself just because I loved being around people and assisting others.
The sense I believe I utilized most throughout my childhood was sight. I was very observant even during times I wasnt suppose to be. I observed many things about certain people and through my sight , it led to my understanding of right and wrong. I remember numerous of times seeing people with laverish things like cars and clothes and I would daydream or play like I was those people even down to the way I would talk, walk, and even treat others. I had dreams of being a singer to a dancer to a teacher, to even being confused and unsure of what I wanted to do but now I realize much of my purpose. As I became older and understood many things that I didnt understand when I was younger, I know I'm here for a reason. And even though I have grown up, many of those childhood things are still prevelant in my life because I know that they too as well serve a purpose.
